$13 Million in Grants for Dairy Processing

Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food & Markets The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center (NE-DBIC) is working to build resilience and capacity in the region’s dairy supply chain. One critical aspect of this work is investing in regional processing.  To that end, NE-DBIC has two dairy processing grants that are open now: 

Fredrikson Farm Doubles Their Cheese-Making Capacity

Ed and Dianna Fredrikson have come a long way from dabbling in cheese making while supporting their daughters in raising goats for 4-H. What started out as a hobby for their girls grew into Fredrikson Farm: a goat dairy in China, Maine, producing chevre and aged cheese that’s now sold throughout New England. 

Local Goods Gathered Helps Maine Cheesemakers Sell Throughout New England

There are over 80 artisan cheesemakers in Maine making a range of varieties, from feta to camembert to cheddar and beyond.  Unless you’re in the state, though, you’re unlikely to get a taste of Maine’s wide diversity of cheeses.  As Holly Aker, owner of Local Goods Gathered and President of the Maine Cheese Guild, put it, because of the state’s rural nature, limited distribution channels, and unique laws around pasteurization, only a small amount of cheese was leaving Maine.  

Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center Grantee Spotlight: Oak Knoll Rebrand

Bridgman Hill Farm is a goat dairy located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, with a 500 head herd. The couple operating the farm have 15 years of experience running goat dairies in California. Any excess milk is sold to Jasper Hill to be made into a variety of specialty cheeses.
