Leading US Seafood Industry Trade Groups Call for Independent Review of Washington DNR Decision

In response to the November 14 announcement that the State of Washington’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will not renew the leases for Cooke Aquaculture Pacific’s steelhead farms in Washington waters, three leading US trade groups–the Northwest Aquaculture Alliance (NWAA), National Fisheries Institute (NFI), and the National Aquaculture Association (NAA) are calling for an independent review of DNR’s decision by one or more third parties such as the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences.

Cargill Executive, Sebastian Perversi, Joins Northwest Aquaculture Alliance Board Of Directors

The Northwest Aquaculture Alliance (NWAA) announced the appointment of Sebastian Perversi, North America Commercial Director for Cargill Aquaculture & Nutrition, to its Board of Directors.  A 19-year Cargill veteran, Perversi previously held the position of the Strategic Marketing and Technology Director (EMEA) for Cargill Animal Nutrition, residing in the Netherlands. He now resides in Washington state.

NWAA Names Dr. Conrad VW Mahnken (1937-2021) as Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award; Announces Plans for “A More Lasting Tribute”

In recognition of his significant contribution to the conservation and restoration of endangered salmon populations, as well as his efforts toward the responsible development of marine aquaculture regionally and globally, Dr. Conrad (Connie) VW Mahnken (1937-2021) has been selected as the winner of the Northwest Aquaculture Alliance’s (NWAA) Lifetime Achievement Award for 2021-2022.

Canadian Federal Court Ruling: the Courts are Paying Attention to Science, Says NWAA

On April 22, Canada’s Federal Court ruled that the cancellation of fish farm leases in the Discovery Islands in British Columbia not only breached procedural fairness but also failed to follow the best available science as provided by nine separate Canadian government-commissioned studies.

The Steward Foundation Awarded USDA Grant to Grow West Coast Aquaculture

The Steward Foundation, along with three key industry partners⏤Oregon Aquaculture Association (OAA), Northwest Aquaculture Alliance (NWAA), California Aquaculture Association (CAA)⏤recently received a $197,000 grant as a 2021 awardee of the USDA Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP). Steward and its partner organizations will use the funding to plan for a Pacific Aquaculture Marketing & Innovation Center (PAMIC).
