Tour de Fresh Connects With 2019 Salad Bar School District Recipients

Since 2014, Tour de Fresh, a four-day cycling event presented by the California Giant Foundation, has donated more than 230 salad bars across the nation to help increase children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables. This year, Tour de Fresh expects to provide at least 50 salad bars to schools across the nation in California, Georgia, Ohio, Texas and Michigan, benefiting more than 25,000 students.

In Face of Relaxed School Nutrition Standards, Forward-Thinking Schools Commit to Prioritizing Whole Grains

The USDA announced that the final rule on school meal flexibilities will weaken school nutrition standards, particularly with regards to whole grains. The announcement that only half of the weekly grains served in the school lunch and breakfast programs will be required to be “whole grain rich” is a euphemism for making a meager 25% of the grains whole.

United Fresh to Offer School Foodservice Membership Category

“Schools are legitimate volume foodservice buyers that collectively serve fresh produce to 30 million children who participate in the National School Lunch Program each day,” said Andrew Marshall, Director of Foodservice & Foundation Partnerships, United Fresh Produce Association. “They are often the ‘largest restaurant in town,’ and through breakfast, lunch, and other child nutrition programs, school foodservice plays an important role in introducing fresh produce to children starting from an early age.”
