Rockford, IL's Piemonte Bakery Co. Still In Demand After Hilander Deal

ROCKFORD — In a nondescript white building tucked away on Rock Street, one of the busiest local companies you might not have heard of works hard to keep a nearly 100-year-old bakery tradition alive.

Piemonte Bakery Co. Inc. is a two-shift, seven-day-a-week operation, turning out products like bratwurst and po’boy buns, bread crumbs, frozen garlic bread, and Italian, French, Vienna and rye breads.

At some point, you’ve probably enjoyed its products, even if you don’t recognize its humble roots — it sells primarily to restaurants and grocery stores.

It’s one of many suppliers affected by the recent deal between Schnuck Markets Inc. and Kroger Co., in which Schnucks bought the seven Hilander stores Kroger operated in the Rock River Valley.
