Big Y To Retain West Hartford Waldbaum’s Kosher Departments

Big Y, the grocery retailer that purchased the Waldbaum's in West Hartford, said Tuesday that it will keep the kosher departments when the store reopens as a Big Y World Class Market in November.

"We evaluated it, and we are going to give kosher a chance," Big Y spokeswoman Claire D'Amour-Daley said.

Last week, some members of West Hartford's Jewish community, especially Orthodox Jews, expressed concerns that Big Y would close the kosher departments when it took over, limiting their choices.

Representatives of Big Y, based in Springfield, met Monday with Rabbi Yitchok Adler, head of the Hartford Kashrut Commission, and agreed to offer fresh kosher meats, deli products and baked goods at the new store, D'Amour-Daley said. Kosher products must be prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary laws and their production supervised by a rabbi or rabbinical group.
