New Groupe Westco/Olymel Poultry Processing Plant Brings End To ‘Chicken War’

The co-owners of a new chicken processing plant in northwest New Brunswick say the plant's pending opening is already bringing an end to the long-standing so-called chicken war in the area.

The Sunnymel plant in Clair, near Edmundston, is co-owned by Groupe Westco, a group of chicken farmers in Madawaska County, and by Olymel, a Quebec processing company.

The Westco farmers used to supply chickens to the nearby Nadeau Poultry plant in Saint-François and Nadeau had tried to stop the new, rival plant through a series of legal challenges and by asking the provincial government to set up new regulations to protect it from the competition.
