Instacart, The Latest Grocery Delivery Biz In Austin

Competition in Austin’s grocery delivery market is about to heat up a little starting Wednesday.

San Francisco-based Instacart LLC is launching its one-hour grocery delivery service in Austin, its 10th city. The company’s business model includes a crowdsourced labor force called “personal shoppers” who shop for and deliver grocery orders providing their own transportation.

Customers place their orders online and personal shoppers retrieve the details on their smartphones. The approach is designed to reduce operating costs by eliminating the need for inventory, warehouses, trucks and full-time drivers, company officials said in a news release.
