UK Survey Finds Higher Levels Of Salt In Artisan Bread

In a recent survey, the Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) has claimed that artisan bread that has secured a place among the healthy choices contains higher levels of salt. The survey has also revealed that bread tagged with specialist bakery names contain alarming levels of these contents as compared to white sliced breads.

In addition, the report has notified around 2.83g of salt per 100g in a brown piece of Pain de Campagne from Paul whereas Stayfresh white sliced bread from Tesco was observed to contain 0.6g per 100g.

However, a majority of available breads were observed to fulfill the existing levels of not more than 1.1g of salt in around two thick bread slices. According to the British Retail Association, approximately all supermarket breads will achieve the lower target of 1g of salt, most probably till the end of 2012.
