American Dairy Coalition Announces Immigration Round Table At Expo

Dairy, livestock and agriculture producers, and allied businesses are invited to an immigration round table “So Who’s Going to Milk Our Cows?” on Friday, October 7th from 7:00 AM-9:00 AM during the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI.  The event will be held on the Alliant Energy Center grounds in Mendota Room 3 in the Exhibition Hall.  There is no cost to attend.

Immigration Reform is one of the top policy priorities for the 30,000 members of the American Dairy Coalition (ADC).  The dairy, livestock and agriculture industries desperately need a reliable labor force, and the ADC is currently working on policy concepts that will provide our members with the labor force they need to operate their businesses.

The round table will introduce attendees to the myriad of immigration terms and policies that are being discussed and gaining momentum at a national level so they can understand the impacts on their dairies and businesses at a local level.  Dairy producers, a Washington, D.C. think tank expert, and policy and agriculture experts will explain immigration buzz words – legal status, citizenship, mandatory minimum wage, driver’s license, comprehensive, state visa, deportation and unions. They will make their predictions about which policy will ultimately move forward, and outline the potential impacts this policy will have on the dairy and livestock industry.

“As the ADC takes an active role in Immigration reform, by researching and developing solutions with our members’ input, additional support is needed,” said Laurie Fischer, ADC President. “I encourage anyone who has concerns about the current and future labor force available to work our farms to join us  at this round table, listen, ask questions and voice your concerns.”

The round table discussion will be moderated by Mike Opperman, MILK Editor. Panelists include:

  • Jon Baselice, Director of Immigration Policy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
  • Kristi Boswell, Director of Congressional Relations, American Farm Bureau Federation®
  • Marilyn Hershey, dairy producer, Ar-Joy Farms (850 cows, 500 acres), Cochranville, PA
  • Alexander Nowrasteh, Immigration Policy Analyst, Cato Institute
  • John Pagel, dairy producer, Pagel’s Ponderosa (5,000 cows, 8,500 acres), Kewaunee, WI
