Lynnfield, Mass. – HP Hood, New England’s leading dairy company, recognized the winners of the Hood Good Sport®* Scholarship contest during a ceremony at Fenway Park on Saturday, May 29.
Hood awarded a total of eighteen $5,000 college scholarships—three in each New England state. The winners, by state, were:
Connecticut
– Chelsea Carroll, Meriden; attending Elms College
– Montana Heon, Lebanon; attending University of Connecticut
– Brittany Wengel, Weston; attending University of Virginia
Maine
– Megan Beliveau, Lewiston; attending Acadia University
– Corey Dyke, Winthrop; attending University of Southern Maine
– Jordyn Mallett, Winslow; attending St. Michael’s College
Massachusetts
– Allison Berthiaume, Berkley; attending Merrimack College
– Katherine Kelloway, Marblehead; attending Skidmore College
– Sarah Platt, Marlborough; attending Georgia Tech
New Hampshire
– Ryan Dunn, Hampton; attending Boston College
– Kelseay McGettigan, Belmont; attending Fairfield University
– Brittanie Pierce, Wolfeboro; attending George Washington University
Rhode Island
– Macy Miller, West Warwick; attending Roger Williams University
– Harley Mitchell, North Smithfield; attending Rhode Island College
– Sean Raposa, Tiverton; attending UMass-Amherst
Vermont
– Wyll Everett, Middletown Springs; attending Wheaton College
– Devon Hathaway, Burlington; attending Georgia Tech
– Thomas Thayer, Fairfax; attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell was on hand to congratulate the winners as they accepted their awards and were inducted into the Hood Good Sport Hall of Fame. The student-athletes watched the Red Sox take on the Kansas City Royals later in the day.
“The ‘Hood Good Sport Scholarship’ program was established to recognize the many positive attributes of today’s high school students,” said Lynne Bohan, a Hood spokesperson. “The group of winners that we selected excelled both in the classroom and on the field, while also displaying a high degree of sportsmanship. We wish them all the best of luck in college and beyond.”
The first-ever Hood Good Sport Scholarship Program kicked off in January. Each applicant was required to meet the following data:
– Minimum of a 3.0 GPA
– Participated in a varsity sport in high school
– Volunteered in his/her community
– Displayed a high degree of sportsmanship while participating in high school sports
Thousands of student-athletes from all across New England applied. The general public determined the 15 finalists from each state through online voting. The finalists were then interviewed by an independent panel of judges, and three winners from each state were chosen to receive a $5,000 college scholarship.
