Saying ‘Cheese’ With A Genuine Smile

Plymouth — Steve Kapellen has what some might consider a dream job: He tastes cheese for a living. He also looks at it, smells it, bends it and crumples it between his fingers, several times a day.

Kapellen is a cheese grader specialist at Sargento, the Plymouth-based cheese processing company that makes products for retail stores as well as for other food companies and food service businesses. Kapellen and his team decide whether a block of cheese is worthy to be turned into a Sargento product.

But Kapellen says the snacking opportunity isn't what's kept him at Sargento for 41 years.

"It's the people," he said. "Everybody's friendly. We have a good time."

Sargento's culture of respect and flexibility is what won the family-owned business the top ranking among large employers in the Journal Sentinel's "Top 100 Workplaces" in southeastern Wisconsin.
