Sylvia Says: Probugs Is A Kid-Friendly Yogurt Smoothie

As evidenced by Captain Crunch, Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam, Trix the Rabbit and dozens of other colorful characters, kids like foods with personality. Unfortunately, the kid appeal usually means lots of sugar and food coloring — a lot of fluff without real nutrition.

Times are changing, though, with companies such as Lifeway Foods. They developed a kid-friendly version of organic yogurt smoothies called ProBugs. They're rich in "friendly bugs" and "probiotics," which help increase the level of good bacteria in children's digestive systems and promote overall healthy digestion. This is really important during cold and flu season, when kids are often put on antibiotics that kill the good bacteria along with the bad.

Another plus is that the smoothie is technically a whole milk kefir. And kefir, I learned, is usually tolerated by lactose-intolerant individuals.
