British Artisan Bakery Peter's Yard Becomes Double Sofi Award Winner

For the second year running, British artisan bakery Peter’s Yard has won the New Product Award in the Cracker category in the Specialty Food Association’s sofi™ Awards competition. Peter’s Yard’s Fig Sourdough Crispbread has been named the 2018 Best New Cracker after their Pink Peppercorn Crispbread won exactly the same award last year!

There were more than 2,600 award entries and to be named Best New Cracker is a testament to the exceptional quality of the Fig Sourdough Crispbread and to achieve the same accolade in consecutive years is an outstanding achievement for the Peter’s Yard brand.

The Fig Sourdough Crispbread was one of 156 Winners across 39 categories. A sofi award is a top honor in the $127 billion specialty food industry and products are judged on taste, ingredient quality and innovation. Entries go through a stringent judging process following a careful assessment by passionate and knowledgeable food professionals including chefs, culinary experts, academics, food writers, and category buyers. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation and represents the best of the best from members of the Specialty Food Association.

The Fig Sourdough Crispbread is new to the US market and will be officially launched at this year’s Summer Fancy Food Show in June. They are made to an authentic Swedish recipe with natural ingredients that include whole-wheat flours, spelt flour, fresh milk, honey and naturally fermenting sourdough that is allowed to ferment for 16 hours before each batch is made. A generous amount of fig pieces are added to the mix to produce a delicious, sweet taste. The Peter’s Yard range is the natural choice for cheese as it doesn’t overpower or mask the flavors of the cheese and the Fig variety works well with all types of cheese but is particularly recommended alongside a soft goats’ or flavorsome blue cheese.

Wendy Wilson-Bett, Co-founder of Peter’s Yard said “As a relatively new brand to the US, we are overjoyed to win the sofi New Product Award for the second year running. The sofi awards reflect quality and provides an independent assessment and true benchmark of the very best foods. There is no better accreditation for our artisan bakery. Since winning the sofi award last year for our Pink Peppercorn, the prestigious nature of the award has helped us gain new listings through a number of key specialty retailers and with larger premium store groups like Bristol Farms, Mollie Stones and securing listings in two new regions of Whole Foods Market on the East Coast.”

The Peter’s Yard range is currently available through World’s Best Cheese, Tony’s Fine Foods, Seacrest Foods, Food Matters Again and a number of specialist cheese stores.

“A sofi means a product, and the people behind it, have arrived,” says Phil Kafarakis, president, Specialty Food Association. “This year’s winners represent a devotion to excellence and innovation in specialty food that continues to fuel our industry, excite consumers and expand retail offerings around the world.”

About Peter’s Yard www.petersyard.com

Peter’s Yard is an award-winning British artisan bakery that makes authentic Swedish crispbread. Made using a traditional Swedish-inspired recipe with simple, natural ingredients, the authentic crispbreads are high in fiber, free from anything artificial and use whole-wheat flours, fresh milk, honey and naturally fermenting sourdough derived from a 40 year old starter that is allowed to ferment and bubble for 16 hours before being used. Each batch of dough is rolled in rye flour, cut to shape and hand-baked until golden, taking care to preserve the characteristic bubbles and curves that come from using a natural sourdough starter. The result is a light, crisp texture that makes the crispbread the natural choice for cheese.

Peter’s Yard’s original crispbread attained 3 Gold Stars at the Great Taste Awards 2015. The crispbread was also listed as a Great Taste Top 50 Food and named by judges as “the best biscuit for cheese out there”. UK specialty retailers have named Peter’s Yard as their Best Biscuit Brand for the past three years (in a survey compiled by the UK Guild of Fine Food Retailers).
