Hidden Gems Among World Champion Cheeses

The winners of the World Championship Cheese Contest have already received plenty of media coverage — toward the end of the public tasting event on Wednesday, it appeared there were as many members of the media present as lab-coated dairy judges.

And once again, the winning cheese was a foreigner: a Dutch Gouda made by FrieslandCampina, with both runners-up from Switzerland (Winzer Käse and Appenzeller Kaese).

Grazing at the cheese-filled tables in Monona Terrace while the judges completed their work, I was struck by several things.

First was the sheer volume of cheese — there were a record 2,503 entrants this year (according to NPR). Jeanne Carpenter, event organizer, said that "more than 20" would be available for public tasting, but I'm guessing that number was low by at least half.
