Murray's Cheese Turns Its Old Cheese Caves Into A Subterranean Event Space

At 3 Leroy Street there’s a plain storefront simply marked with a logo made up of the letters L and R. A small placard instructs visitors to “ring for laundry,” and once buzzed in guests are led through a long, narrow and dimly-lit hallway lined with textured wallpaper featuring vibrant gold and deep, earthy tones. It quickly becomes clear that this is no laundromat.

The Leroy Room is a new underground event space (opened earlier this month) by longtime New York City cheese and specialty food shop Murray’s Cheese. The space served as Murray’s cheese caves from its original construction in 2008 until 2013, when the company moved its cheesemaking operations to Long Island City, in Queens. Some of the brand’s most beloved Cave Master cheeses were developed here, but beyond that the caves were also “a coveted gathering place for staff to explore and be inspired,” according to a release.

As a nod to this history, Murray’s invites the outside community into this intimate space, which has been transformed into a luxe venue offering guided tastings led by certified experts, cocktail hour and gourmet meals.
