Colleen Plimpton: New & Notable Plants For 2012

The Pantone Color Institute has decreed the must-have fashion color for 2012 is Tangerine Tango, described as "an electric orange-red."

As it happens, that's a color that looks dreadful on me but really sparks up my garden. So it's a good thing hues of apricot, pumpkin, tangerine and amber are represented in the promenade of new All-America Selections (www.all-americaselections.org) plants for the coming year.

The flower award winner — annual ornamental pepper (capsicum annum) "Black Olive" — sports bright reddish-orange flowers and the subsequent fiery-hot peppers are edible as well as decorative.

This purple-foliaged plant stands some 20 inches by 12 inches and is useful in a border, for cut flowers or in containers.
