Iowa Beef Industry Council Elects Officers And Seats New Director

Dan Cook, New Providence, was elected chairman of the Iowa Beef Industry Council
at the February board meeting. Cook will lead the group of beef producers who
oversee the beef checkoff program for Iowa’s 30,000 beef producers. Elaine
Utesch, Correctionville, was re-elected vice-chairman; secretary is Roger
Brummett, Bedford, and treasurer is Scott Niess, Osage. Stan Zylstra, Hull, is
also a director. These five directors were elected by cattle producers at the
annual meeting held in January. Other members serving on the Iowa Beef Industry
Council Executive Committee are Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture;
Wendy Wintersteen, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University;
and Phil Schooley, Bloomfield, representing the Iowa Livestock Market
Association.

Newly appointed for a one-year term is Ken Birker, Vinton, who joins other
one-year appointees Doug Rock, Swea City; Mike Curran, Chariton; Malcolm Miller,
Beaman; and Bob Henderson, Albia. Terri Carstensen, Odebolt; Scott McGregor,
Nashua; Tom Hotz, Lone Tree; and Helen Wiese, Manning, serve as one-year
appointees and represent Iowa on the Federation of State Beef Councils. Iowa’s
Beef Board directors, who are appointed by the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture,
include Will Frazee, Emerson; Dan Petersen, Muscatine; and Jeff Clausen, Carson.

Beef producers who represent Iowa on national beef promotion committees serve in
leadership positions. Terri Carstensen, Odebolt, chairs the Advertising
Committee and was elected as Region III vice-president of the Federation of
State Beef Councils; Helen Wiese, Manning, chairs the Retail Committee; Jeff
Clausen, Carson, and a Beef Board member, chairs the Beef Safety Committee; and
Scott McGregor, Nashua, is vice-chair of the Foodservice Committee. Will Frazee,
Emerson, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.
