California Citrus Growers Spend $87M Fighting Freeze

EXETER, Calif. — Citrus growers in California's San Joaquin Valley have spent about $87 million fighting off crop-damaging frost as a cold front has swept through the region this month.

Temperatures in the valley's key citrus-growing areas ranged from the mid-20s to the low 30s on Monday and Tuesday, dips that can damage fruit if the cold lasts for more than three hours.

California Citrus Mutual President Joel Nelsen says growers used frost protection on about 25 days this month.
