Georgia Pecan Commission To Sponsor NYC Fitness Event

ATLANTA, Ga. (Sept. 1, 2010)— The Georgia Pecan Commission is partnering with FITNESS magazine for the ninth-annual FITNESS Mind, Body, Spirit Games, Saturday, Sept. 11, in New York City’s Central Park. Devoted to health and fitness, the day-long event will reach the commission’s target audience of health-conscious men, women and families to educate on the health benefits of pecans. It features activities, including both men’s and women’s 4-Mile runs along with kids races.

As part of this health-focused event, registered dietitian and author, David Grotto, RD, LDN, will be in the Georgia Pecan Commission booth to answer health questions and sign copies of his latest book, 101 Optimal Life Foods (Bantam Books, 2010). Signed copies of 101 Optimal Life Foods will also be raffled. Samples of Georgia pecans will also be available at the booth and in event gift bags along with recipe ideas and nutrition information.

“Not many people know that pecans have more antioxidants than any other tree nut,” says Duke Lane Jr., Georgia Pecan Commission chairman. “We are proud to share this and other Georgia pecan health messages with such an enthusiastic, inspirational group.”

In 2009, nearly 5,000 men, women and kids packed Central Park to participate in the eighth-annual FITNESS Mind, Body, Spirit Games. This year’s event is expected to draw an equally enthusiastic crowd. The event is executed in partnership with New York Road Runners.

The 4-mile men’s and women’s runs are scored races that count toward the nine races NYRR members need to be eligible for guaranteed entry into the ING New York City Marathon 2011, as of January 2011.
