LOS ANGELES – The Giumarra Companies announces that it will work together with RD8 Fresh Produce from New Zealand to offer apricots and cherries this season.
The fruit is grown in the Central Otago region, which has unique growing conditions due to the alluvial soils rich in natural nutrients. The climate is well suited to growing apricots and cherries, with very cold winters and hot, dry summers.
“We are confident in the superior quality of this fruit and think it will be perfect to complement our stone fruit from Chile,” says Craig Uchizono, Vice President Southern Hemisphere for the Giumarra Companies.
RD8 is so named for the rural postal delivery service in New Zealand, which is very important for the farming community. The postal service numbered the routes and these became part of the address by which farms were identified, hence RD8. The “8” also symbolizes the sign of infinity or sustainability, and a true partnership with continuity between growers and customers.

Mr. Astill reported from a visit to Central Otago that growing conditions are excellent and fruit quality is high.
“The apricot season is progressing well. Temperatures have lifted and the fruit growing nicely,” says Astill. “The best of the export apricots will begin harvest in early January.”
Cherries are shipping now and will peak in mid-January. Cherries will conclude shipping in mid- February and apricots will conclude in early March. The fruit is available on both the East and West Coasts.
