Publix, Produce For Kids Help Families Eat Smart

LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 29 — Publix Super Markets is partnering with Produce for Kids to help families eat healthy and raise money for PBS KIDS this fall.

From now to Oct. 27, when shoppers buy sponsored products in the produce department, a donation will be made to support PBS' efforts to provide educational content, resources and outreach materials for families and educators that promote healthy eating throughout the year.

"Publix is working on several initiatives to help families make healthier choices, especially our families with young children who are establishing eating habits that will last a lifetime," said Maria Brous, director of media and community relations. "It's easier than ever to make healthy eating part of your family's daily regimen, and stick to a budget at the same time."

This is the fourth year that Publix has partnered with Produce for Kids, an organization that promotes the benefits of healthy eating and supports worthy causes for children, to raise funds for PBS KIDS. Publix's shoppers have helped to raise more than $255,000 since 2007.

Purchase of the following items at the more than 1,000 Publix stores in five states will benefit PBS KIDS: Crunch Pak(r) sliced apples; Del Monte Gold(r) extra sweet pineapple; Fresh Express(r) packaged salads; Marie's(r) dressing and dip; Select One(r) tomatoes on the vine; SUNSET(r) tomatoes on the vine; Santa Sweets(r) grape tomatoes; RealSweet(r) sweet onions; Red Diamond grape tomatoes; Welch's(r) Healthy Start 100% juice.

Shoppers can visit the redesigned produceforkids.org for information on registered dietician-created Ideal Meals(TM), as well as find games for kids, view video-casts and enter the Play with your Produce contest for a chance to win grocery gift cards; details are available online. Teachers can also get into the fun and win money for their school by entering the Play with Your Produce Classroom Challenge for grades K-6. More information is also available at produceforkids.org.

Created in 2002 by Shuman Produce Inc., a nationwide grower/shipper of sweet onions, Produce for Kids(r) brings the fresh produce industry together to raise funds for children's non-profit organizations while educating families about the benefits of healthy eating.
