Sourhouse’s DoughBed Bread-Proofing Bowl Raises Over $100,000 in Less Than 3 Hours— Surpassing its Initial Kickstarter Goal by 400%

DoughBed, the second viral baking hit from Sourhouse, helps bakers consistently proof perfect bread loaves. Pre-orders can be made until May 31st

Asheville, NC – Sourhouse, the makers of the wildly popular Goldie sourdough starter warming device, have another viral baking hit on its hands. Its new DoughBed bread-proofing bowl blew past its initial $25,000 Kickstarter goal by raising over $100,000 from over 800 backers in less than three hours after its 8 am ET launch.

Named a “Project We Love” by Kickstarter, DoughBed by Sourhouse™ is a bread-proofing bowl outfitted with a warming mat that enables any baker to proof dough just right. The overwhelming response underscores the struggle even experienced bakers face in properly proofing dough during the critical first “bulk” fermentation stage. Backers have until May 31st to pre-order DoughBed via Kickstarter.

DoughBed follows on the heels of Goldie by Sourhouse, the startup’s inaugural product that solved another major challenge of keeping sourdough starters at a consistently ideal temperature. Goldie was also a Kickstarter blockbuster, ultimately raising over $100,000, and has since sold thousands of units worldwide.

“Properly proofed dough is the biggest challenge in bread baking…especially for home bakers,” said Sourhouse co-founder Erik Fabian. “We created DoughBed to take the guesswork out of the proofing process with a tool to help create consistently good bread.”

According to Sourhouse co-founder Jennifer Yoko Olsen, an industrial designer, the problem for most home bakers isn’t their dough, it’s their kitchen temperatures that are often too cold for proper dough proofing and, more importantly, always changing.

“For home bakers, constantly changing kitchen temperatures are the enemy of properly fermented dough,” said Olson. “One minute it’s too cold, the next it’s too warm – throwing your dough game completely off schedule. DoughBed solves that problem by providing the perfect, consistent proofing environment every time.”

Feature highlights include:

  • The open and shallow bowl – inspired by traditional wooden dough bowls – which is super pleasant and ergonomic for mixing, folding, and kneading.
  • The transparent glass design allows you to visually track the dough’s rise and know when the dough will be ready to shape
  • A cork warming mat gently holds dough at the ideal 75-82°F proofing temperature
  • An insulating cork lid prevents the dough surface from drying out
  • An international USB plug that requires only 10w of power – the most energy-efficient way to proof a few loaves of dough.

Olson noted that DoughBed also offers an all-in-one proofing solution that can be used by sourdough bakers and bakers using commercial yeast as well.
