Sunkist Celebrates The Cara Cara Orange With National Video Contest

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. — In celebration of its 120th Anniversary, Sunkist Growers launches The Power Orange® Challenge encouraging a taste discovery and trial of the Cara Cara Navel orange. The Cara Cara isn't your typical navel – though on the outside it might look like others, it is exceptionally sweet and juicy and inside features a distinctive pink flesh which makes it standout from the rest. All that flavor and Cara Cara also packs a nutritional punch with 150% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C. Sunkist invites consumers to try a delicious Cara Cara and share their first taste via video submission from now until March 3, 2013 for a chance to win national fame and cash prizes.

"This is the perfect time of year to discover the mouth-watering Sunkist® Cara Cara. Mother Nature blessed us with a healthy crop that is extra sweet and juicy and sure to dazzle your taste buds after the first bite," commented Leland Wong , director of marketing for Sunkist Growers. "The Power Orange Challenge is an exciting opportunity for consumers to share their taste experience with others."

Citrus lovers across the country are challenged to grab their video cameras, a tasty Sunkist Cara Cara and creatively share what they love about this sweet orange. Judging will be based on entertainment value (30%), originality (20%), production quality (20%) and integration of two key Cara Cara characteristics from the list below (30%):

  • Cara Caras are exceptionally sweet and juicy
  • Cara Caras are seedless and easy to peel
  • Cara Caras are a special hybrid of navel oranges and not related to grapefruit
  • Cara Caras pack 150% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C

Grown in California and Arizona, the Cara Cara, like all navel oranges, has a bright orange exterior, is easy to peel and is seedless. The pulp is juicy with a tangy cranberry-like zing. Better known as "The Power Orange" because they are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, a good source of fiber and folate, and a natural source of lycopene, a health-promoting antioxidant, Cara Caras are quickly becoming a seasonal favorite.
