Meijer Breaks Ground For Second Detroit Store

With mounds of dirt, moving bulldozers and dump trucks as a backdrop, company and city officials touted the benefits of a new Meijer store in Detroit built on the site of the former Redford High School.

The store is to open in about a year.

“We want to thank you so much for joining us today for the formal groundbreaking ceremony for our second Detroit store,” company cochairman Hank Meijer said Monday. “We say formal, because, as you can see, we’ve been moving a little bit of dirt already.”

Last year, the Grand Rapids company opened a superstore near Woodward and 8 Mile in Detroit.
