Save Mart Has Agreements With Unions; Other Chains Still Seek Contracts

Save Mart Supermarkets can now breathe a sigh of relief, and watch as Raley’s and Safeway Inc. continue to try to resolve their labor issues.

Modesto-based Save Mart has agreements with all three labor unions that represent its workers. The final deal needed was with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5. That group’s executive board agreed Monday to accept the Save Mart-Lucky contract offer, Local 5 spokesman Mike Henneberry said Wednesday.

Last week the union, which represents workers at about 125 Save Mart Supermarkets and Lucky Stores outside of the Sacramento region, failed to get a two-thirds majority for a strike, meaning the union would accept a new contract.

The new 18-month contract started immediately. A separate two-year stabilization agreement suspends higher Sunday pay and makes other labor concessions. It automatically sunsets, with the hope that in two years Save Mart returns to profitability, Henneberry said.
