Almost 40 years ago, Michael Tullock decided to open a discount grocery store in a gift shop his parents owned in Etowah, Tenn.
Today, Tullock is the president and majority owner of United Grocery Outlet, which has 35 stores in five states, including one on Glenwood Avenue in Dalton, and more than 700 employees.
And Tullock has just been named retailer of the year by the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association.
“We are kind of a niche grocery store, so we are very surprised they recognized us. But we are very happy,” said Tullock during a visit to the Dalton store on Thursday. “I wanted to come out to the different stores and recognize all the associates. My name is on this plaque, but they are the ones who are out here serving our customers every day. They are the ones making sure we put our best foot forward and provide the best value for our customers.”
