Winn-Dixie To Open Two Remodeled South Florida Stores

Winn-Dixie will open two remodeled stores in Plantation and Lake Worth before the end of the summer as a part of the grocery chain's aggressive plan to rebrand itself.

Jacksonville-based Winn-Dixie has been remodeling stores in South Florida since the summer of 2010, when a new prototype store opened in Margate. Since then, stores have been remodeled in Aventura and Miami in 2011 and more recently in Davie, Hallandale Beach and Miramar earlier this year.

"We've basically taken the shell of old Winn-Dixie stores and rebuilt it completely," said Robin Castillo, Winn-Dixie's district director for stores in Broward County. "This is all a part of our strategic plan to reposition us in the South Florida market."

Winn-Dixie stores are being revamped to compete with the many other grocers in the marketplace, including upscale grocers like Whole Foods Market and The Fresh Market, but even new discount concepts like Aldi and Save-A-Lot. The new store formats include a specialty cheese department, expanded wine and produce sections, new salad, pizza and pasta bars and wider, easier-to-navigate aisles.
