Catfish Farmers Face Mounting Pressures To Keep Business

Will Pearce has been fighting to keep his 121 catfish farms alive and well amid the invasion of foreign imports from Asia.

So far, Pearce and his family have done so with a simple plan, produce more.

“We have had to try and max out our production just to stay in business,” said Pearce. “We are doing things a lot different than we were 10 years ago. We weren’t stocking near as heavy, we are trying to get as efficient as possible on the acreage we have, just cause feed prices have gone up 60 percent and that is our number one costs.”

According to Pearce, the cost of feed has moved from about $400 to $600 in just the past year.
