Crab Fishermen Urged To Remove Traps From Closed Waters

BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources strongly urges all crab fishermen with crab traps in the closed waters of the Mississippi Sound to temporarily remove their traps. This advisory is a result of concerns about interference with oil abatement activities being conducted in Mississippi waters.

Any individuals retaining any marine species from the closed area will be required to immediately return them to the waters. The fishery closures are a result of oil sightings and the protection of public health related to seafood safety. The continuous monitoring of this situation is to ensure public safety and protection of Mississippi’s coastal resources.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
