Harmful Algae Forces Shellfish Ban In RI's Sakonnet River

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island has closed part of a river to shellfish harvesting because of harmful algae.

The Department of Environmental Management has closed the lower Sakonnet River to shellfish harvesting until further notice.

The department says the closure is associated with an algae bloom being monitored in state waters.
