House Of Representatives Passes Bill Designed To Help US Seafood Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House of Representatives has passed a bill designed to help the U.S. seafood industry. Congressman Charles Boustany (R-South Louisiana) said it would protect Louisiana’s shrimp and seafood industry.

Boustany and Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-New Orleans) first introduced the PROTECT Act in 2012. The House passed it Friday as part of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act. It would give U.S. Customs more tools to inspect foreign seafood and stop illegal trade practices.

“Thankfully the bill before us today contains language from my PROTECT Act providing tools for Customs to help out our legitimate importers and distributors and trade effected domestic industries to prevent and combat fraud at our border, not after the fact which makes it much more difficult to deal with,” Boustany said to his colleagues on the House floor.
