Lobster Council Of Canada Traceability Project Welcomed

O’LEARY — Fishermen here welcome the federal government’s decision to help fund a Lobster Council of Canada project that will enable consumers to trace the Canadian lobster on their plate right back to the fisherman who landed it.

“It will definitely help us, because it will show (the consumer) where the lobsters are coming from and how we’re fishing them,” said Prince County Fishermen’s Association president Lee Knox. “We’re not growing them.”

Knox noted that one Island cooperative has already incorporated traceability into its sales program.

LCC Executive Director, Geoff Irvine, said consumers are demanding to know more about where their food was harvested, farmed or processed.
