NANTUCKET – Last week marked the first day of the 2013-21014 commercial scalloping season and early reports indicated it was off to a slow start, particularly due to the high winds that buffeted the island.
Shirley Souza at Souza's Seafood set her retial price of $16 per pound at around 2 p.m. this afternoon. Scallops were ready to go at Sayle's Seafood and Glidden's Island Seafood earlier this afternoon, being sold at $17 per pound and $19.95 per pound, respectively. Fishermen are being paid $12 a pound for shucked scallop meat, with at least one buyer Salty Balls Seafood paying $13.
Last season island scallopers hauled in approximately 18,100 bushels of the shellfish between Nov. 1, 2012 and the end of March, down slightly from the previous year's roughly 20,000 but far exceeding the 2010-2011 season total of 6,916.
