NJ Reopens Most Shellfish Beds In Wake Of Irene

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey has reopened most of the shellfish beds it closed as a precaution just before Hurricane Irene hit the state.

The Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday reopened shellfish beds in the ocean from Sandy Hook to Cape May Point, and reopened river beds from the Metedeconk River to Cape May.

Still closed are shellfish beds in the Raritan Bay, Sandy Hook Bay and the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers. Tests were done there on Tuesday, and a decision on reopening these northern beds could be made as early as Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, weather-permitting, crews will test shellfish in Delaware Bay to see if a harvesting ban there can be lifted soon as well.
