Seafood Limitations Spark Debate In New England

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — The fruits of the sea — whether lobster or mussel, bluefish or clam — must be hauled from Long Island boats if they are to be sold at a farmers market here.

So ruled the salty locavores of the Planning and Zoning Commission, who refused to amend the town's farmers market regulations by a 6-3 vote Tuesday.

Approval of the amendment, proposed by Town Planner Betty Brosius, would have allowed the sale of "fish and seafood from the waters of New England.''

Commission members argued that the farmers market regulations specifically limit the offerings in those markets to what is grown in Connecticut or New York.
