Bakers Paying More As Wheat Prices Rise

The price of bread is going up.

With wheat and other key ingredients ratcheting up in price, commercial bakers say they've been paying a premium, while keeping costs down for recession-minded consumers. Prices have gone unchanged for everything from Costco muffins to multigrain bread, but bakers say to turn a profit they're going to need more dollars for their dough.

"We have decided to move forward with a nominal price increase so that we can recover some of the higher costs," said Dean Folkvord, whose family-owned Wheat Montana business sells flour and baked goods nationwide.

Like a lot of bakers, Wheat Montana had locked in contracts for key ingredients when prices were still relatively low, but prices have since risen sharply.
