Baking & Breaking Bread At Toronto's St. John's Bakery

In a small storefront at 153 Broadview Ave., north of Queen Street, Jennifer Wilson places aromatic, freshly baked banana bread in plastic packaging and onto shelves.

She’s been working at St. John’s Bakery for almost a year now as the only female breadmaker, but sometimes helps the other women in the baked goods department when they need it.

“I love to bake,” said Wilson, who transit from Parkdale five days a week. “I help out because I know how to do both positions.”

Wilson is currently working at the bakery full time, paid through Ontario Works after losing her job at a nursing home after working there for six years.
