Florida's El Zocalo Supermarket Produces Fresh Tortillas Daily

El Zocalo stocks a large selection of mass produced tortillas that can be found at typical supermarkets, but chooses to produce its own tortillas to meet the demand of the large Hispanic community in the area, manager Sonia Buendia said.

Haines City's population is 38.9 percent Hispanic, 16.4 percentage points over the state average, according to U.S. Census data.

It's not Miami but there is a need for a product that Buendia says is a thrice-a-day staple for a lot of families in the area.

"The majority of the people who live in the area are Mexican or Hispanic. For Mexicans (tortillas are) like rice," Buendia said in Spanish. "It's a complement to a Mexican plate. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas and most meals are served with tortillas."
