Harris Teeter, Jon Beason Launch Dessert To Benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

Charlotte, N.C. – Carolina Panthers’ middle linebacker Jon Beason showed his support to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina on Friday evening, announcing the re-creation and sale of his favorite childhood dessert at two Harris Teeter locations starting next Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. Proceeds from sales of the dessert will benefit the food bank.

“It has always been important for me to give back to the community, and for the past two years, the Food Bank, Harris Teeter and I delivered Thanksgiving meals to children and their families at Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Beason, via a pre-taped recording played in front of 700 guests attending Chef’s Best. “It was amazing to experience the joy expressed by those children when they accepted the holiday dinner…”

“I also encourage you to give back to the food bank at every chance you get. … Starting tomorrow, Harris Teeter will sell my Double Decker Key Lime Strawberry Pie, proceeds of which will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina,” said Beason.

Beason’s Double Decker Key Lime Strawberry, a version of his favorite childhood dessert, will be available at both the Morrocroft and Cotswold Harris Teeter locations on Aug. 4, 2012 and Aug. 5, 2012, while supplies last, for $5 per slice or $30 per whole pie. Harris Teeter will also be sampling the dessert. Beason also donated a signed jersey to the food bank that was auctioned live at the dinner event.

In its 23rd year, Chef’s Best is an evening of gourmet food and entertainment designed to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina’s Community Food Rescue program. Local chefs: Chef Gene Briggs, Blue Restaurant & Bar and Osso Restaurant & Lounge; Chef Tom Condron, The Liberty; Chef Bruce Moffett, Barringtons Restaurant; and Chef Joe Kindred, Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen; created a four-course menu using local produce items available in Harris Teeter stores. The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charlotte hosted a reception prior to dinner, and Biltmore Winery, Shelton Vineyards and E&J Gallo Winery also participated.

With over 700 guests attending the event, the food bank expects to raise over $100,000.
