Hostess Warns Of Illinois Layoffs

Hostess Brands Inc.’s bankruptcy fight with its unions over reducing its labor costs could have a significant impact on Illinois manufacturing.

The maker of Wonder Bread, Twinkies and Ho Hos sent potential layoff notices to all 18,500 of its employees last month, including 1,380 in Illinois. More than half of the company’s Illinois workers, 807, are in Cook County where Hostess has bakeries in Schiller Park and Hodgkins, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Hostess also has a bakery in Peoria County where it employs nearly 200 people. The company also has distribution centers and dozens of retail outlets in the state.
