Pastry Chef 'Secret' Goes Retail

CHESTER — Satin Fine Foods CEO Kevin O'Reilly sees a place for fondant — a European-style pastry icing on which he's built his company — in grocery stores, displayed between cake mixes and baking tins.

That's why he's launching a retail fondant pack that could be in supermarkets as soon as this summer.

Fondant is marshmallowy-sweet, but stiffer than the frosting now found on supermarket shelves. The fondant in new retail packs sold under the name Satin Ice comes in a solid block that must be rolled out into a sheet to cover cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

O'Reilly expects the retail fondant packs to be the main growth machine for his company.
