The Upper Midwest Bakery Association board awarded the first Curt Borchert Scholarship to Gabe Howard at its annual convention on February 23, 2013.
The $500 scholarship was created to honor Curt Borchert, the former executive director of UMBA.
Gabe was born and raised in Saint Paul Park, Minnesota. He is the youngest of four sons.
His mother came with him to the UMBA banquet (his father was traveling on business).
He is currently a student in the baking and pastries program at Le Cordon Bleu in Mendota Heights.
