Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced that it has completed the sale of substantially all of the assets of RMH Foods, LLC to an investor group led by the Rocke family. At the same time, the company announced that it completed the sale of Maverick Food Company Limited, its Chinese joint venture, to COFCO Limited.

Safety Of Beef Processing Method Is Questioned

When USDA approved of an ammonia treatment to kill e. coli in beef products, it was considered so effective, that the company who created the process, Beef Products Inc., was exempted from routine testing of product sold to the public. But mandatory school-lunch testing has revealed Beef Products Inc. products to be contaminated, challenging the safety claims of the process.
