A “No Shell Left Behind” bill before Maryland lawmakers would provide a dollar a bushel tax credit for recycled oyster shell, a move one conservation group hopes will increase supply of the empty bivalves needed by hatcheries.

Seafood Omega-3 Increases Reading Age In Children

Researchers at Oxford University in England are investigating the impact of omega-3 supplementation on reading ability, memory and behavior in children of elementary school age. This new research provides promising evidence on the benefits of adequate omega-3 fatty acids for children who find reading difficult. Louisiana blue crab and oysters are included in seafood species that are the primary source of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have been linked to improved health for decades, but more recently to increased brain functions.

NOAA's Fishing Policies Under Investigation

After issuing a series of investigative reports exposing excessive enforcement on the part of federal fisheries agents, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Office of Inspector General has now turned to auditing how NOAA carried out and implemented policies that have transformed fisheries into commodity markets — and are being blamed for job losses and consolidation throughout the industry.
