Even In The Dairy Business, There Are Ways To Innovate

“Find a need and fill it” may be one of the oldest clichés in the business handbooks, but it has endured the test of time because it is true.

What may be surprising to some is that there are new needs in most markets, not just in the online space, creative economy or sciences. Admittedly, nothing new has happened in dairy manufacturing in Vermont for quite some time. The last big innovation out of Vermont was Ben & Jerry’s.

But from our previous position buying private label products for a major supermarket chain, it was clear that yogurt was ripe for a new player. It was an area of growth, no longer just a “healthy” product, but something that all members of the family were eating. And as we tried to source products for our store, we realized that opportunities existed for someone who was willing to do something a little different, a little better.

As with many businesses, common sense helped guide us in developing Commonwealth Dairy in Brattleboro, and a little bit of luck got us the rest of the way.
