Horizon Applauds Decision To Continue To Allow Plant-Based DHA Omega-3 In Organic Food

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Horizon®, the leading organic dairy brand in the U.S., is applauding a decision by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to continue to allow certain added nutrients in the production of organic foods. Among the ingredients that will continue to be allowed in organic foods is plant-based DHA Omega-3, which Horizon has used to fortify several of its products since 2007.

The NOSB approved the continued use of the form of plant based DHA Omega-3 that is not hexane extracted.

This decision by the NOSB is a clear win for the millions of consumers who have chosen to purchase Horizon organic milk with plant-based DHA Omega-3 because of the added benefits DHA Omega-3 is thought to deliver, including support for brain, heart and eye health at every stage of life. Moving forward, the brand will continue to offer a full line of Horizon organic DHA Omega-3 products just as it does now.

“This decision reaffirms that our non-synthetic, vegetarian plant-based source of DHA Omega-3 is a smart addition for use in organic products,” said Mike Ferry, Horizon president. “Consumers can continue to feel good about purchasing Horizon organic products with DHA Omega-3 knowing that the plant-based DHA Omega-3 we use in them is safe, effective, non-GMO and not extracted using hexane.”

Horizon uses a plant-based source of DHA Omega-3 in its products because it is free from any possible ocean-borne contaminants, does not contribute to overfishing and is vegetarian. The brand has been offering products with plant-based DHA Omega-3 since 2007, and has seen strong consumer demand for the line over the past four years. Since the line launched in 2007, millions of consumers have enjoyed the added benefits of organic milk with plant-based DHA Omega-3.

Today’s decision by the NOSB is also positive for Horizon’s growing network of more than 600 family farmers. Strong consumer demand for Horizon organic DHA Omega-3 products helped the brand double the number of family farmers it works with over the past five years.

Organic milk with DHA Omega-3 is an example of the type of innovation in organic dairy that has helped the category grow. In 2010 alone, sales of organic milk with DHA Omega-3 grew 54 percent.
