After 56 years of providing milk to communities throughout the Mid-Willamette Valley, Mallorie's Dairy is closing.
The herd has been sold to a Texas dairy, and the first shipment of cows is tentatively scheduled for departure Jan. 17. According to herdsman Mike Dinsmore, the Silverton dairy has about 1,200 milkers, but the total livestock population is 3,000, including younger animals.
After the first shipment of cows is gone, layoffs will begin. Mallorie's has about 55 employees, 50 of whom work full time.
Dinsmore has been with Mallorie's for 30 years and said there are a number of other employees who have worked there for just as long.
