Research Group Seeks FTC Probe Of Dean Foods Milk Claims

Dean Foods Co. (DF) was accused of misrepresenting the health benefits of some of its organic milk in a recent advertising campaign by a Wisconsin-based nonprofit farm policy research group that is seeking a Federal Trade Commission investigation into the matter.

The Cornucopia Institute, which focuses on organic foods, on Thursday filed a request asking the FTC to investigate claims made in a national marketing campaign by Dean's White Wave division for its Horizon milk with Omega-3 DHA. According to the institute, the campaign focuses on purported benefits to children's brain development from drinking milk with added DHA oil, which is highly processed from fermented algae.

The institute says the company's claims that the proprietary DHA oil supports brain health isn't based on credible scientific evidence and is misleading. The group also alleges that food processors that add the manufactured oils to organic foods are violating regulations and standards governing the organic-food industry.
