SWANTON — Via Cheese has laid off its production staff and is no longer producing cheese.
“We’re in the middle of a financial restructuring,” general manager John Reggio said this morning.
The company has not filed for bankruptcy, but Reggio could not say if it will resume hiring at any point.
As of last fall the company employed 48 people.
“It’s a very significant hit for the Town of Swanton,” Dick Thompson, Swanton town administrator said, of the loss of jobs.
“It’s also a blow to the dairy community, too. It’s a double hitter,” Thompson said.
