Upstate Farms To Begin Yogurt Production In Upstate NY

NORTH LAWRENCE — Yogurt production will resume at the North Lawrence Dairy plant as soon as next month, according to the plant’s new ownership.

Upstate Niagara Cooperative purchased the former Breyers Yogurt Plant from Healthy Food Holdings in May. Healthy Food Holdings ended production in April, putting 137 out of work.

Buffalo-based Upstate has hired 35 to 40 employees since it purchased the plant, according to spokeswoman Eva Balazs. Training has begun for those employees and Upstate has been upgrading the facility and adding new equipment. “Remodeling is under way,” she said. “We’re doing upgrades to some of the facilities and equipment to have everything conform to our needs.”

Test runs are expected to commence at the plant about Sept. 1, and production will begin shortly after that, Ms. Balazs said.
